This room is named after the Macchiaioli ( roughly translated "the blemishers" ): it was one of the most important Italian artistic movements during the 1800's, born in Florence. The term "Macchiaioli" was first used in the gazzetta del popolo ( laymens newspaper ) in 1862. During these times the little saloon of the cafè Michelangelo in via Larga ( today called via Cavour ) was filled with new ideas. The most important representatives of this movement are: Serafino De Tivoli, Odoardo Borrani, Raffaello Sernesi, Giovanni Fattori.
